Antifascist and Proud! Hard Facts to Fight Back Against Propaganda.

Being antifascist makes you a terrorist?! This total insanity is endorsed by governments on every continent, hammered home by obedient media outlets, and parroted on loop by pundits who are nothing but pathetic lackeys of the system.
Meanwhile, those who pass laws that crush civil liberties are supposedly democrats. Those who pour billions into fueling hatred are supposedly philanthropists. Those who weaponize poverty to pit people against each other are supposedly patriots. For fuck’s sake! We’re living straight out of 1984! And the bigger the lie, the easier it goes down!
This no-holds-barred article is dedicated to everyone who’s been thinking real hard what we’re about to say out loud. Like the fact that antifascism is not a political “side.” Because it’s simply the default position of any human being with a functioning brain and a bare minimum of memory. So buckle up for this sweeping overview that’s going to rip the masks right off of fascism. And by the end, we’ll see who the real terrorists are in this upside-down world! Before we get started, let me point out that unlike fascists, whose favorite sport is manipulating facts and history, all we need is the truth to rub their noses in their own mental filth.
What is antifascism? A quick refresher for those with amnesia!
Antifascism wasn’t born in a sociology department. It was born in blood! In the absolute urgency of survival against regimes that were grinding entire populations to dust.

The first antifascists were Italian workers getting beaten to a pulp by Mussolini’s Blackshirts in the 1920s. International brigade volunteers who went to die in Spain fighting Franco. Ever since the revolutions against monarchism, resistance fighters, partisans, and guerrillas on every continent have chosen to die on their feet rather than live on their knees. Many others chose torture over betraying their ideals of liberty, equality, and fraternity.
These people are still called heroes to this day. Some of their names are even carved into monuments. In some countries, there are even national holidays in their honor. So it’s pretty damn hard to call them terrorists, because erasing history is virtually impossible. So instead, the manipulation consists of making the new generation of antifascists look like losers compared to their predecessors. According to fascists, modern antifas are just mindless vandals with no ideology. Except that couldn’t be further from the truth!
So if you think antifascism has become some outdated fight from another era, open your eyes for five minutes. Because we’re living in tough times with billionaires in power trampling fundamental freedoms. With media at their beck and call turned into propaganda machines. With scapegoats singled out for public outrage. With the most vulnerable minorities painted as targets to be taken down. So compared to the old days, the situation is exactly the same. That’s why modern antifascism absolutely has its place as a counterforce against oppressors of all stripes.
What is fascism? Etymology and history of a murderous ideology
The word fascism gets thrown around for just about everything. So much so that we end up forgetting what it actually means. So here’s a little history refresher so we know exactly what we’re talking about: The word fascism comes from the Italian “fascio,” meaning bundle. Which itself derives from the Latin “fasces.” In ancient Rome, the fasces were a bundle of wooden rods tied around an axe. They were the symbol of the absolute power of Roman magistrates. The power to punish and the power to kill. Separated, the rods break easily. But tied together, they become unbreakable. The entire fascist philosophy fits in that image. Unity through force. Submit or be destroyed.
It was in 1919 in Milan that a former socialist who’d been kicked out of his own party founded the Fasci italiani di combattimento, the Italian Combat Fasces. This half-crazed guy went by the name of Benito Mussolini. A megalomaniacal narcissist obsessed with the fantasized greatness of the Roman Empire. An opportunist who switched ideological sides as many times as he changed mistresses. He himself claimed he could be “aristocrat and democrat, conservative and progressive, reactionary and revolutionary” depending on the circumstances. Bottom line, he had zero real convictions. Just an absolute thirst for power.
His method was physical and verbal violence as a political tool. His Blackshirts beat up workers, burned down community centers, and assassinated opponents. In 1922 came the March on Rome. The king caved and Mussolini seized power. And within a few years, he methodically destroyed all opposition by taking control of the press, banning unions, and crushing fundamental rights. The playbook for large-scale totalitarianism was laid out. Which allowed others to follow suit with even more ferocity.
The word fascism wouldn’t stay Italian for long. Very quickly, it would spill far beyond borders to become the catch-all term for every form of authoritarianism and nationalism. Hitler, Franco, Salazar, and so many others would copy, adapt, and often amplify Mussolini’s model. With the consequences everyone knows about. Tens of millions dead. Hundreds of millions of atrocities. The greatest slaughter in human history. And the most terrifying part of all is that the recipe for stripping entire populations of their freedom hasn’t changed one bit.
The gallery of monsters: From the founder to fascism’s modern heirs
Mussolini opened the floodgates and what followed was an absolute shitshow of authoritarianism. Because the history of fascism is a long list of butchers in suits and ties who all followed the same recipe with local variations.
Hitler in Germany pushed things all the way to industrialized horror. Bankrolled by the biggest German industrialists, and even American ones, he turned fascism into a machine of extermination. Six million Jews were murdered in concentration camps. Along with millions of Roma, homosexuals, disabled people, and political opponents of all kinds. Meanwhile, Franco in Spain established a dictatorship that lasted nearly 40 years by crushing his own people in a civil war of unimaginable violence. Salazar in Portugal sealed his country under a blanket of oppression for over 40 years. Pétain in France handed over entire families to the Nazis with the eagerness of a teacher’s pet.
And don’t come around claiming fascism is a right-wing monopoly! Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot proved that red fascism could be every bit as devastating. From the gulags to the reeducation camps, from the Holodomor to the Khmer Rouge, the totalitarian left has more than proven its track record when it comes to mass horror. All in all, the list is endless and it spares no continent.
But that’s all in the past, right? Sure, it’s in every history book. So by now we should have learned our lesson about populism. But nope, not a chance! Putin is crushing Ukraine and poisoning his opponents in the name of eternal great Russia. Trump is turning the world’s leading superpower into an authoritarian circus with a billionaire throwing Nazi salutes as master of ceremonies. And all around the world, far-right parties are either knocking on the door of power or already comfortably settled in.
What are the different forms of fascism?
A lot of people picture fascism as one monolithic thing with uniforms and military parades. But the reality is way more devious than that! Fascism is a true chameleon. It adapts, it mutates, it disguises itself… But beneath its various masks you always find the same psychological profile and the same mechanisms of domination.
Political fascism: Nostalgia for a golden age that never existed
The breeding ground for political fascism is always the same. Take a population suffering from real social decline. Add a generous dose of nostalgia for a totally fantasized past greatness. Mix it all together and let it simmer.
“Make America Great Again”! Great when exactly? When Black people were banned from drinking at the same fountain as white people? When 12-year-old kids were working in mines? And Putin’s “eternal great Russia”? What glorious empire are we talking about exactly? The one where tsars let peasants starve to death or the one where Stalin shipped them off to the gulag?
It’s always the same trick! You invent a glorious past that never existed to justify an authoritarian political project in the present. And it works! Because people who are suffering desperately need to believe that going backwards will fix everything.
Religious fascism: Future glory as a license to oppress and kill
With religion it’s the same mechanics but in reverse. Political fascism sells a fantasized past, while religious fascism sells a fantasized future. Paradise, the global caliphate, the promised land, the kingdom of God on earth, the return of the messiah… So many unverifiable promises that justify the worst atrocities in the name of one or more gods whose existence remains, let’s say, very much unproven. And good luck proving it! We’re still waiting for the evidence, by the way…
In the meantime, the list of variations on this massive scam keeps growing: Christian evangelical fundamentalism that’s eating away at American and Brazilian politics. Radical Islamism turning entire countries into lawless zones. Zionism justifying apartheid based on texts that are 3,000 years old. Hindu nationalism that lynches Muslims in the name of the sacred cow. And even Buddhism, supposedly the religion of peace, endorsing genocide in Myanmar. With all that going on, we’re in deep trouble!
At the end of the day, no religion is spared. Absolutely none! The moment any belief meddles in politics and claims to impose its worldview on those who don’t share it, that’s just straight-up fascism. Period.
State fascism: The elephant in the room
And now the topic that makes a whole lot of people uncomfortable: ALL governments, without exception, carry within them the seeds of fascism. It’s a matter of degree, not nature. The proof: What state doesn’t have blood on its hands? Which one has never crushed a legitimate revolt? Beaten peaceful protesters? Imprisoned opponents? Lied to its own people?… I’ll let you think about that.
By the way, that’s exactly why there’s always been this mutual loathing between anarchists and communists. Because anarchists understood from the very beginning that all centralized power, even in the name of the people, ends up turning against them. And history has proven us right every single time. Every damn time! Which gives me the opportunity to highlight Louise Michel and her famous declaration: Power is cursed, that is why I am an anarchist.
Fascism and capitalism: A match made in heaven!
There’s something fascists of every stripe have been trying to hide forever. A truth so massive it’s staring you right in the face. And yet almost nobody talks about it in the mainstream media. The fact that fascism has ALWAYS been the armed wing of capital. Always. No exceptions!
Mussolini? Carried to power by Italian industrialists and big landowners who were scared shitless of the workers’ unions. Hitler? As we already saw, bankrolled by big capital. Franco? Backed by the latifundists and the Spanish oligarchy. Pinochet? Installed by a coup orchestrated with Washington’s blessing to protect the interests of American corporations.
Every single time, the same pattern. The ultra-rich see their privileges threatened by popular movements. So they bankroll a strongman to crush the people in the name of the people. And the ultra-rich keep on fattening up quietly behind the curtain.
And today? The curtain doesn’t even exist anymore! Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, throws Nazi salutes in public and plays kingmaker at the White House. Peter Thiel openly funds the most radical right in the United States. Meanwhile in Europe, billionaires are buying up entire media empires to turn them into propaganda machines serving their interests. And nobody bats an eye! After all that, we’re supposed to keep our mouths shut or be labeled terrorists!
The mechanism is crystal clear. Unchecked capitalism produces mass downward mobility. Downward mobility produces anger. And anger is one hell of a fuel. All you have to do is channel it toward easy targets to stigmatize: Immigrants, sexual minorities, leftists, welfare recipients, environmentalists… In short, anyone EXCEPT the people actually responsible. Anyone except those gorging themselves at the top of the pyramid while everyone else fights over crumbs at the bottom.
And if after all that you still believe that Trump, or any populist leader for that matter, gives a damn about you, your paycheck, or your future… then the smokescreen is working exactly as intended.
How does fascism feed on political and religious populism?
Fascism never falls from the sky. It doesn’t impose itself by magic. It needs fertile ground and that ground is populism. Whether political or religious, the mechanism is exactly the same. And it always works on two levels.
At the top of the pyramid you always find very smart people. Strategists, PR experts, master manipulators who don’t even believe half of what they’re peddling. These people know exactly what they’re doing. They know the tricks, they’ve mastered the playbook, they know which buttons to push to trigger fear, hatred, or manufactured hope. For them, politics or religion are just tools. Levers to access power and hold onto it. They speak to the people but they despise the people. They call out the elites but they ARE the elite. And they have a good laugh at night counting their money.
At the bottom you find the followers. People whose suffering is often very real. The downward mobility, the unemployment, the constant insecurity, the feeling of being ignored by a system that abandoned them. All of that is true. The problem is they’re aiming their anger at the wrong target. They’ve been handed easy scapegoats to identify and hate. The immigrant stealing your job. The leftist living off your taxes. The green-haired LGBT person. The Muslim threatening your culture. The environmentalist who wants to stop you from driving your gas-guzzler. These are all convenient bogeymen while the people actually responsible for their misery keep on stuffing their pockets with total impunity.
It’s the exact same hustle on the religious side. At the top, preachers, imams, rabbis, gurus of every kind living like kings off the gullibility of their flock. At the bottom, sincere believers, often in distress, who are promised paradise in exchange for their total submission. And in between, nothing! No debate. No questioning. No critical thinking. Just blind obedience.
Being antifa and lumped in with the big political circus? That’s a hard no!
“Far left.” That’s the idiotic label they slap on your forehead the second you open your mouth. You’re against fascism? Far left! You’re against billionaires buying elections? Far left! You’re for social justice? Far left! You’re for free speech? Far left! Basically, if you disagree with the agenda of the oligarchs who monopolize power, you’re automatically “extreme” something.
What a beautiful scam! “Far left,” come on, that doesn’t mean a damn thing! It’s a pure invention designed to criminalize any form of dissent. A convenient classification tool to file troublemakers into a box and discredit everything they say without even having to address their arguments. You’re labeled, therefore you’re disqualified. Move along, nothing to see here!
We refuse to play that game! We refuse to sit in the bleachers of this big political circus where the left and the right put on a show while the same people pull the strings backstage. Because that’s exactly the trap. Making you believe you have a choice between two sides when both of them work for the same boss.
And while we’re tearing each other apart over “left” and “right,” “moderates” and “extremes,” the real battle goes completely unnoticed. The ones at the top versus the ones at the bottom. Those who have everything versus those who have nothing. But of course, that’s the one thing we’re not supposed to talk about! That’s not on the agenda.
So let’s be perfectly clear: We’re not left, not right, not center, not extreme anything. We’re just on the side of those who refuse to get played. And if that bothers anyone, good! That means it’s working.
Didier Desor’s rat experiment is the key to understanding everything
What if the key to understanding this whole mess was sitting in a rat cage? It might sound crazy, but a scientific experiment conducted in 1994 by Didier Desor, a behavioral neuroscience researcher at the University of Nancy in France, shines a light on our society with surgical precision.
The experiment is simple: You take six rats. You put them in a cage whose only exit leads to a tunnel filled with water that they have to swim through underwater to reach the food. And you observe…
After a few days, the same social structure systematically appears. Two exploiters who never get wet and who beat up the others to steal their food. Two exploited ones who dive in, bring back the food, get shaken down, and only eat once the exploiters are full. Plus one punching bag who gets the scraps. And one autonomous rat who dives to get his own food and defends it tooth and nail. The exploiters can’t do a thing about him. They tried to bring him in line but got their asses handed to them every time. So they leave him alone and go back to picking on the exploited ones who don’t fight back.
The most fascinating part is what came next… Desor took six exploiters and put them together. They fought all night long. And by morning, the same structure had re-formed. Two exploiters, two exploited, one punching bag, and one autonomous. Same thing with six exploited rats together. Same thing with six autonomous ones. Every single time the same hierarchy re-forms. As if it were a fundamental law of nature.
And when the experiment was replicated with two hundred rats, the cruelty went through the roof! Three rats were mutilated with their skin ripped off. And the exploiters at the top didn’t even get their paws dirty anymore. They’d created lieutenants to do the dirty work for them.
Ring any bells?
The conclusion of this experiment is a massive slap in the face! Because it proves that the creation of stress systematically leads to the establishment of a hierarchy of exploiters, exploited, and autonomous individuals. The only thing human beings have ever invented beyond what rats do is the persecution of the autonomous ones.
And that’s exactly where we are! The autonomous ones, those who refuse to dominate AND refuse to submit, are the antifascists. Originally, the exploiters couldn’t bring them to heel through brute force. So humans figured out what rats didn’t have: Courts and media propaganda. Where an exploiter rat would get smacked trying to shake down an autonomous one, a state can simply declare him a terrorist and lock him up. Clever, sure, but above all absolutely vile.
The inversion of values: When fascism rewrites reality
We’re living in an era where a billionaire can publicly claim that Hitler was a communist and millions of people nod along in agreement. An era where the word “activist” has become synonymous with criminal. Where “resistance fighter” has become synonymous with terrorist. Where “antifascist” has become an insult. We’re living inside Orwell’s nightmare. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.
This inversion doesn’t come out of nowhere. It’s a deliberate, methodical, and extremely effective strategy. Because the far right figured out a long time ago that to win the political battle, you first have to win the battle over language. Infiltrate the words. Twist the concepts. Flip the meaning of things until nobody can tell truth from fiction anymore. And let’s not forget, of course, the famous Overton window technique.
And to sell this garbage they need spokespeople. Media figures. Cardboard heroes like Charlie Kirk in the United States, supposedly able to demolish any leftist in rhetorical showdowns filmed for social media. Except these so-called showdowns are a total circus act. Loaded questions thrown at students caught off guard in front of a camera. Edited footage calibrated to keep only the moments when the opponent stumbles. Pure manipulation! Because the reality is that with the garbage he had rattling around in his head, this guy wouldn’t have lasted two minutes against even a halfway prepared intellectual.
But the truth doesn’t matter in this game. What matters is the spectacle. What matters is the thirty-second clip that gets three million views. What matters is creating the illusion that fascism has something positive to offer. When it never has! To this day, fascism has never won a single intellectual debate in all of human history. Not one! It only wins through force, through fear, through manipulation, and through lies. Never through reason.
And that’s exactly why they need to smear antifascism. Because antifascism is reason. It’s memory. It’s the refusal to swallow bullshit wrapped in patriotic or religious gift paper. And that, for them, is the ultimate threat. That’s why all of us antifascists, in every country, need to step up our game and at the very least take back the ground that has been conceded to fascism.
Conclusion: Being antifascist is a source of pride, a duty, and a real fight
Being antifascist is a source of pride! There’s nothing to be ashamed of. Being antifascist means standing in the lineage of millions of women and men who fought the greatest battles humanity has ever known. People who gave their freedom, their health, and often their lives so that you today can speak your mind without ending up in a cell or a mass grave. Their memory deserves to be honored every single day. Not once a year at some hypocritical official ceremony where politicians lay wreaths while passing laws that spit on everything those heroes stood for.
Sure, you can’t stop some people from having garbage in their heads. That’s impossible and it always will be. Because history has proven that human stupidity is an inexhaustible resource. But what you can stop is those people from dictating the rules of the game.
So we need to make sure that all these fascists who are strutting around 24/7 in the media, on the web, and in our streets hang their heads. We’re talking about neo-Nazis, religious extremists, megalomaniac billionaires, bitter masculinists, brainwashed tradwives, gutter pundits, crooked politicians… And plenty more where that came from! All these people need to crawl back into the sewers they never should have crawled out of. Because antifascism is not dead! Because antifascism will never die! Because as long as there’s a single asshole trying to crush other people there will always be someone to stand up and say get back in your kennel. And that someone is you. It’s us. It’s now!
